Natural product and organic synthesis

Natural Product Chemistry is the field of research that investigates the process of extraction, isolation using chromatography and identification by spectroscopic methods of chemical constituents of living organism sources such as plants, animals, microorganisms, local herbs and agricultural waste. The chemical constituents can undergo derivatization and biological activity assays for further medicinal chemistry investigations.

Total Organic Synthesis involves study of chemical synthesis of complex organic molecules that starts from commercial starting materials. The target molecules are biologically active natural products such as alkaloids, heterocyclic compounds and terpenes etc. This process also enables synthesis of analogs of the molecules of interest for Structure-Activity-Relationship (SAR) study, such as synthesis of analogs of known and marketed drug molecules by modification or substitution of structural units to increase therapeutic efficiency and reduce undesirable side effects.
